THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE DETAIL
A quote can name the room without explaining every part of the work. Explore a few examples, then bring the questions back to your own project.
A CLOSER LOOK
Examples only.
EXAMPLE A
Chosen sink cabinet included and installed.
The quote names the cabinet and includes supplying and fitting it.
EXAMPLE B
Sink cabinet budget set aside.
The quote includes money towards the cabinet, but the final choice is still open.
QUOTE A / FINISHING LINE
Painting nearby trim and taking away old materials included.
The quote includes these jobs.
QUOTE B / FINISHING LINE
Painting and taking away old materials arranged by the homeowner.
The household would need to arrange these parts separately.
QUOTE A / TIMING LINE
Proposed start to be agreed.
This line does not say what happens first or which rooms you can use.
QUOTE B / TIMING LINE
Order of work and when you can use the bathroom described separately.
Read that separate plan as well as the quote.

Back to my comparisonOpen a description to see what it means. These choices do not rate the contractor.
The quote says this work or product is included. Still check which product, how much work and what preparation the price covers.
The quote includes money for an item or work that is not fully chosen or settled yet. Ask what that amount covers and how your final choice changes the price.
This quote does not cover the item or job. Ask who will buy or arrange it and whether there is a separate cost.
You cannot tell from the quote whether this part is included. Ask the contractor to explain it in writing.
This checker helps London, Ontario homeowners and those nearby understand what their quotes cover. In a quote, “scope” simply means the work included. Read one topic at a time and choose what your quote says. We turn your answers into questions to ask. You can see questions before finishing; topics you have not checked are not treated as problems.
It does not read your quotes, judge whether a price is fair, inspect your home or rate a contractor. It does not check whether a contract meets legal requirements. The same answer can still describe different work, products or promises.
For questions about how the work will happen, choose whether the quote explains it clearly. “Not relevant” is your answer—not confirmation that a permit or other requirement is unnecessary. Money set aside and work left out can be fine when you agree who handles each part.
For the fuller explanation, read how to compare renovation quotes. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s written-contract guidance also explains what written quotes should cover, money set aside for undecided items, and changes to the work. It helped shape these questions; the association has not endorsed this tool or Task Elite.
SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE
Eight things worth making clear. Start with the question that matters to you, or use the checker to organize your answers.
The interactive checker needs JavaScript. These questions remain available to read, print and use in a project conversation.
Does the quote say which rooms and jobs it covers, how much work is included and what you are keeping?
A list of specific tasks is different from a broad phrase such as “renovate the room.”
Does the quote name the products, set aside money to choose them later, or expect you to buy them?
Look for product names, money included for undecided choices, and anything you need to buy yourself.
Does it cover removing old materials, getting surfaces ready and dealing with known damage?
Fitting new tile and getting the surface behind it ready are separate jobs. Check whether both are included.
Does it include repairing nearby surfaces, cleaning up and taking away old materials?
Ask about nearby paint and trim, where floors meet, and removing waste. Do not assume “installation” includes every finishing job.
Who arranges electrical or plumbing work and checks whether permits are needed?
Ask who books any required inspections and keeps the work moving. This checklist cannot decide which permissions your project needs.
Are taxes included? What is still undecided, what costs extra and when do you pay?
The total should be explained: what is included, what could change and when each payment is due.
When will work happen, which rooms can you use and what interruptions should you expect?
Mention an only bathroom, daily cooking needs or a route through the home that must stay usable.
How do you agree to changes, and who do you contact about a problem with the finished work?
Ask how changes to the work, price or timing are agreed in writing before they happen, and how problems afterwards are handled.
Not every question applies to every home. When something is not mentioned, ask; do not assume it is included. Money set aside does not confirm the final product.

This checker does not ask for quote files, contractor names, addresses or prices. When your browser allows it, a temporary copy of your answers is saved in this tab for up to 30 minutes after your last change. An expired saved copy is removed when checked. Your answers stay available while this page remains open; continuing saves them again. Start again clears the comparison.
You can copy or print your questions without contacting us. Choosing “Use these questions in my project enquiry” prepares a form containing your summary. You can review, change or remove it; nothing is sent until you submit. Website activity, such as tool starts and clicks, may be measured, but your detailed comparison is not included in those activity records.
